In my view, a manager’s role extends far beyond simply implementing a methodology or operationaling a tactical project. It is about fostering the right climate. Whether one calls it a « winning culture » or a « performance culture » matters little ; it is underlying framework that I instil in both my staff and my players. It is essentiel that every individual connected to the first team remains focused on the pillars upon which we build everything else. These pillars stem from two core convictions that define my vision as a manager.
Our primary objective is to win matches. This depends on our ability to perform consistently. Consequently, it is paramount to create an environment where performance can thrive.
By « an environment conductive to performance », I mean a setting in which :
The same applies to staff members and all collaborators. I view psychological safety as a vital lever for management and learning. Most of my management principiles derive from this desire to maintain a high-performance environment. Furthermore, seasons are long and the pressure for results is constant. I must ensure this environment allows everyone to work efficiently and perform throughout the entire campaign. It is a marathon, not a sprint.
Finally, this is why I do not believe in « magic recipe » that can be replicated identically from one club to another. On the contrary, I believe in a bespoke approach. This is what my experiences in France, China, and England have taught me. We must focus account for the club’s history, its values, its vision, and the culture of the country. By building a technical project aligned with the sporting strategy and these club-specific factors, we can create the right environment around the first team. That is how we give ourselves a genuine chance to win.
While appreciating individual and collective victories is essential, we must never settle for what has already been achieved in such a hyper-competitive landscape. How can we improve ? How can we do even better ? Even when reaching the top, how do we defend our titles ? These are questions we must ask ourselves constantly. I am a perfectionist, driven by a desire to always become better. It is a philosophy.
Regardless of the ressources at my disposal, one of my main tasks is to optimise them – players, staff, training conditions, protocols, and methodology. Everything must be optimised. Continuously. Football evolves every year. I must get the very best out of my squad and every individual within it.
This tanslates into a very pragmatic approach :
This culture of optimisation ensures we are always prepared. The better prepared we are, the better we can anticipate and navigate change. It makes it easier to handle the uncertainty that is part of daily life in professional football. When combined with an environment that encourages open communication and creativity, this attention to detail gives the staff qnd squad the flexibility and responsiveness required to adapt and perform all season long.
